Black Tie

You need to wear a formal outfit when the invitation calls for a Black Tie. Men wear tuxedos while women wear cocktail, long dresses or fancy evening separates.

Formal attire usually means the same as Black Tie, but in some cities like Los Angeles or New York, it could mean a black shirt with a tux and no tie. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or fancy evening separates.

A White Tie or Ultra-formal invitation demands men to wear a full dress, with white tie, dress shirts, and vest while women clothed in long gowns.

Semi-Formal

The Semi-Formal or After Five means the long dress of a woman and tuxes of a man is no longer required. An evening wedding would dictate dark suits for man, and a cocktail dress for the woman. Daytime semi-formal events mean a suit for him and a short dress for her.

The Business Formal is the same with Semi-Formal for him, but for women it opts for more tailored dressy suits and not too aphrodisiacal dresses.

Cocktail Attire

The Cocktail Attire means short, refined dresses for her while dark suits for him.
