The cut of a diamond is the most important factor to consider when determining which diamond ring to buy. The rating of a diamond’s cut will determine the best bargain, when you are looking at two comparatively priced diamonds. A diamond’s brilliance is determined by the way it refracts and reflects light, therefore, the meticulousness of every cut made in a diamond, carries great weight. Excessively shallow or deep cuts will produce an inadequately cut diamond that allows light to exit through the bottom or sides of the diamond, preventing the light from reflecting back through the top of the stone. The objective is to prevent any light from being lost, as it bounces off all of the cut sides of the diamond, and eventually reflects back through the surface, and this is accomplished when the proper number of facets and precision angles are cut in the proper proportions, as in a well-cut diamond.

The use of the term “good color” usually conjures up visions of rich bright colors however, with diamond rings, this is not the case. In diamonds, being colorless is both rare and costly thus making these the most highly prized. The opposite end of the spectrum is home to the more ordinary and inexpensive known as yellow diamonds. Clarity is the term to describe a diamond’s interior features, and in order to be able to conduct an inspection of the stone, you will need a jeweler’s microscope. The tiny ripples, specks, and indentations on the inside of a diamond are imperfections that are called inclusions. The fewer inner imperfections a diamond has the higher its value, but you can buy a diamond with slight imperfections that can appear as beautiful as a flawless diamond, if the cut and color are of a high quality.

Diamond weight is calculated in points and carats, with 100 points making up a carat. When determining price, a single stone of one carat is far more expensive that several stones with a combined weight of one carat. Knowing the ‘per carat cost’ of a diamond will allow you to know the actual diamond price, however, it is important to bear in mind that that even though large diamonds with a high carat weight are impressive in size. However, only after considering the cut, color and clarity can true value be determined.
